Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to get a new outlook on the world, whether you do it in your home country or somewhere less familiar. There are lots of ways in which you can give your time, energy and skills, so …Why is volunteering through International Volunteers for Peace so special?

In IVP we see volunteering as a way of making social change. Getting people from around the world together to do something practical and learn about each other is a great start. But we are also conscious that while we are getting a new outlook, there are people looking right back at us! As an IVP volunteer be ready to ask and be asked; to question and explain your values and those of your society; to share information and to teach and be taught.

“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.”  Mother Teresa

Why do we have peace in our name? Conflict, struggle, injustice, discrimination, isolation, environmental degradation and destruction threaten peace between people. All of us know well enough that responding to these problems is vital to our shared global future. What we want to emphasise is that it is the everyday actions of ordinary people of different backgrounds living and working together that make peace possible.

International Volunteers for Peace (IVP) gratefully acknowledges the sponsorship of AvantCard and Pat Mackle, Managing Director for production and distribution during June 2009 of 20,000 postcards promoting IVP and featuring the graphic above.

Short Term Volunteering. For volunteering at a workcamp (2-4 weeks short-term project) - see the workcamps section of the site.

Medium and Long Term Volunteering (3 to 12 months positions)

IVP's Long Term Volunteering programme gives volunteers the possibility to stay abroad from 3 to 12 months, working in a project that cooperates with a local SCI branch or partner or a NVDA partner.

Medium term volunteers (MTVs) work for 3 to 6 months; Long term volunteers (LTVs) work for 6 to 12 months (or even more). Volunteers are provided with food, accommodation and some pocket money and are usually covered by a basic SCI insurance. Travel costs to the project are generally covered by the volunteer and there are no age limits.

Please note: Volunteers wishing to apply for an MTV/LTV position need to have completed a previous workcamp. Those who have not satisfied this requirement are not eligible to apply for an MTV/LTV placement. Relevant volunteering experience is a pre-requisite for MTV/LTV placements since the demands placed on the individual volunteer is considerably higher in comparison to that of a workcamp. Volunteers will be assessed for their suitability for each individual placement and the selection criteria will be based on relevant experience and/or training.
