Oceania (Australia and Pacific) Workcamps 2009

Australia
Title: Languages for World Peace

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WORKCAMP HAS BEEN CANCELLED AND MAY TAKE PLACE IN 2010

Host: Spielwelt German Parents Association Inc., a not for profit organisation, runs children’s programs in German. They want volunteers with other languages to enrich the children's experience of cultural diversity.
Work: The volunteers will spend the first few days learning about the activities of the centre with an opportunity to interact with the 3-5 year old children who are learning German as a second language. With assistance from Spielwelt parents, volunteers will plan exciting activities that incorporate languages for the 5 -10 year old children. The overall aim is to have children understand that speaking different languages is not a barrier to peace and cooperation, and that other languages are something to be accepted and celebrated. The volunteers will then run the activities with 30 to 40 children during a four day program. Spielwelt staff and parents will be on hand to give support and suggestions if needed. The volunteers will also plant shrubs at the Scout Hall as an environmentally friendly way to protect the hall from graffiti, and as a way to leave a permanent remembrance of the workcamp.
Accommodation: Scout Hall with kitchen, showers, toilets, electricity. Bring your own bedding. Food will be prepared by the volunteers. Some visits and sight-seeing will be arranged.
Study: Put together a booklet of cooperative or non-competitive children's games and activities from around the world. Volunteers should bring their ideas and research with them.
Language: Any.
Location: Canberra
Terminal: Canberra Airport.
Extra: Please write a page explaining your motivation including any previous experience working with children/planning children’s activities. If you have a police clearance or "working with children check" please attach a copy to your application.

Work: Volunteers will work with the community to continue projects started at the previous workcamp: 1. Lay up stones at the seaside for cyclone protection. 2. Dive to remove ‘crown of thorns’ star-fish from the reef. 3. Assist with building of a community hall.
Accommodation: Communal hut, very basic with no electricity, water must be carried by bucket for washing and for flushing toilets. Mattress supplied. Volunteers should bring sleeping bag.
Family camp: There will be the opportunity for parents to bring children (total 4 children for the camp). Volunteers will be required to sign a ‘work with children’ form or supply a police record check.
